Introduction

The Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa is a religio-humanitarian institution established to promote Vedanta as exemplified by the life and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Sri Ramakrishna’s message of practical spirituality and Swami Vivekananda’s humanistic ideas provide the impetus for the Centre’s work in South Africa.

The spiritual progress of the individual and thereby the community at large forms the central thrust of the activities of the Centre. The Centre is also involved in numerous humanitarian and social upliftment programmes amongst the disadvantaged people in South Africa.

The Centre is a Branch of the worldwide Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, West Bengal, India. In South Africa the Centre has both Public Benefit Organisation and Non-Profit Organisation status, below are the respective numbers:

Showcase of Recent Activities

Literature Distribution – Tongaat Secondary School

On 3 May 2013, free literature on the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda in both English and isiZulu as well as school stationery were distributed to learners at the Tongaat Secondary School.

Easter Vedanta Retreat

Vedanta Retreat at Temple hall progressing…

A Vedanta Retreat was held at the Centre, Glen Anil on Friday, 29 March 2013 from 06.00 am to 12.30 pm. This half-day Retreat provided devotees with a supportive environment to engage in spiritual practices and to spend time in the company of our Revered Swamis.

The public function to commemorate the 177th Birth Anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna was held at the Centre, Glen Anil on Saturday 16 March 2013 in the Swami Nischalananda Hall from 4.00-5.30 pm.

Swami Gautamanandaji’s arrival in South Africa

On the occasion of the 150th Birth Anniversary celebration of Swami Vivekananda in this rainbow nation, Revered Swami Gautamanandaji maharaj came on a 9-day visit to South Africa. He is presently one of the Trustees of the Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission and also holds the position of President of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. In Durban airport, he was heartily welcomed by VimokshanandaSaradaprabhananda and senior officials. He was accompanied by Swami Atmajnanandaji maharaj, Secretary to the visiting Swami. They returned on the 16th by the afternoon flight to Chennai.

The 150th Jayanti of Swami Brahmanandaji

Swami Brahmanandaji, the first President of the Ramakrishna Math

The 150th jayanti of Swami Brahmanandaji also fell this year on the 12th of February. Swami Yatishwaranandaji, a disciple of Swami Brahmanandaji was a well-known monk for his erudition and higher spiritual living. His pioneering Vedanta work in Europe is still remembered. It is pertinent to note here that the visiting Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj is a disciple of Swami Yatishwaranandaji. On 13th February, 2013, His Holiness Swami Gautamananda delivered the key-note address held in a function at Durban Centre. His Talks on “Spiritual Instructions of Swami Brahmananda” were received well by the devotees.
