Introduction

The Ramakrishna Clinic of South Africa was established in 1959 by Swami Nischalananda, founder and first President of the Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa. From an early organisation rendering medical, relief and welfare services to the disadvantaged in our community, the Clinic has evolved into a multidimensional entity providing a diverse range of professional medical services.

The Clinic serves disadvantaged individuals irrespective of race, religion, language, creed or socio-political affiliation. All professional services are rendered on a voluntary basis, free of any cost to the patients.

A panel of ninety-five professional staff, the majority of whom are specialists and super-specialists in the full spectrum of medical disciplines, and an equal number of support staff, render services on a regular basis to indigent patients in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal. Regular activities of the Clinic include specialist ward rounds at ten State Hospitals, community clinics, medical camps and medical assistance to hospices, geriatric centres, frail care centres and step-down facilities.

Partnerships have been established with the Department of Health, the South African Red Cross Air Mercy Services as well as private hospital groups in order to enhance existing public sector services. All patients treated in private facilities, eg. hip replacement and cataract surgery, are sourced from the public sector.

A total of 17,219 patients have been treated from 2005 to 2007, with 6,060 patients being treated in 2007.
