Activities

Medical Camps

As the brunt of AIDS and poverty is felt amongst children the Clinic conducts medical camps especially to cater for this need. Two paediatric camps have been held annually for the last five years. Up to 12 doctors and 60 support staff including medical students, health educators, laboratory technicians, pharmacists and dental therapists are in attendance. Up to 600 patients are seen at a time. Medication is distributed free of charge. Medical Clinics were run at the Effingham Creche. Weekly Medical Clinics are held at the Pietermaritzburg Ashram. An average of 20 patients are seen per session. Undergraduate medical students also gain experience in the management of patients in the primary care setting under the guidance of consultants.

Hospitals

The Clinic provides specialist cover to ten State Hospitals in KwaZulu Natal.

Hospices

Optometry and Counselling are provided to the elderly inmates of the Verulam Day and Pakco Frail Care Centre.

Counselling

Counselling services are provided at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital for the terminally ill and AIDS patients at monthly intervals by qualified counsellors. Regular counselling services covering family violence, suicide, substance abuse etc. are conducted at the Headquarters at Glen Anil. The Clinic has a presence on the religious advisory panel at the Highway Hospice, Sherwood.

Crisis

During times of crisis, displaced communities, fire and flood victims are offered medical services by the Clinic.

Optometric Clinics

Yearly Optometric Clinics are held at Shakaskraal. Four optometrists are in attendance. Logistic support is given by the local branch of the Centre. Up to 72 patients are seen per session. Glasses are provided at a subsidized rate. The Optometry as well as the Paediatric Clinics are conducted in disadvantaged rural areas of Kwa-Zulu Natal where professional resources are scarce. Optometry services are also rendered in other areas.
