Workshop on Basic Nursing Care of the Terminally-ill

The HIV/AIDS and TB epidemics are major problems in South Africa. The Clinic initiated its AIDS education programme in 1995. Charts have been printed by the Clinic and distributed in schools, hospitals, factories and other institutions. Charts have been published both in Zulu and in English, highlighting the dangers of AIDS and suggesting healthy lifestyle changes as a prime measure to overcome the spread of the disease. Qualified counsellors also undertake AIDS counselling and education programmes. At the various clinics, a TB screening procedure has been adopted and appropriate referrals are made of suspected cases. A booklet covering medical and dietary information useful for diabetics and another covering mother and childcare have been distributed to clinics and medical practices in the community. Regular lectures are held at the Centre on various medical topics.
