Atmano mokshartham jagad hitaya cha (For one's own salvation and for the welfare of the world)

His Holiness Sri Swami Shantatmanandaji Maharaj

(Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi, India)

15 - 29 July 2010

Swami Shantatmananda is a senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order and is well known as an able administrator and spiritual mentor.

His expertise in the area of financial administration and fund management has been the cornerstone of the financial transparency and accountability at the Headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math (Kolkata), where he had a long stint of thirty years. During that period he had the blessed opportunity to come into close contact with several luminaries of the Order.

During his tenure, the branch centres of the world-wide Ramakrishna Mission received new impetus in streamlining their financial records and policies. This went to further reinforce the outstanding degree of transparency and propriety in matters of finance, which the Ramakrishna Mission is known to embody in its administration.

Swami Shantatmananda was also a pioneering influence in setting up an NGO in the suburbs of Kolkata, called Sarada Seva Sangha, which is managed by one hundred trained women volunteers. It is one of his exceptional achievements in the area of women's empowerment, which is a developmental area close to his vision of nation-building.

The other areas which continue to constantly engage him are human development, disaster management and value education.

Swamiji is a self-professed advocate of character building and man-making value education based on the universal insights, which are common to all spiritual traditions, as presented by Swami Vivekananda and Vedanta, which he feels should impact on our educational structure and policies extensively.

Swami Shantatmananda is very close to youngsters and inspires them towards a life of purpose, dedication and service with a rare passion that is characteristic of the mission of Swami Vivekananda.

He is passionately involved in the interfaith dialogue leading to closer understanding between different faiths and is deeply committed to all peace initiatives.

Swamiji conducts regular discourses in English and Bengali as also in Tamil and Hindi on rare occasions.

After he took over charge of the Ramakrishna Mission, Delhi, Swami Shantatmananda has visited Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Russia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland on lecture tours, besides visiting many cities in India on invitation to give lectures on different spiritual topics.
